This is an interesting detail for me. What appears to be a minor gender change is actually a complete change of meaning. This seems to be a uniquely "Italian" feature.

buckle your seat belt, its going to be a bumpy ride! There are also lots of Italian words that are confusing because they are spelled very similarly but have different meaning depending on their genders. Esempi:
il filo = wire / la fila = line or cue
il foglio = paper / la foglia = leaf
il gambo = stalk / la gamba = leg
il collo = neck / la colla = glue
il porto = port / la porta = door

I wrote a blog about this that may be of interest called "Non fraintendermi! -Don't misunderstand me!" http://melissamuldoon.wordpress.com/2010/01/31/...

(I didn't know you were from Chicago...I lived there for many years in Oak Park and Wheaton and worked downtown!)
