You already speak a foreign language!

Remember that knowing what you’re saying doesn’t matter; you’ve only just begun. The goal is to be fluent in one year, not in one day. Though it may not sound like much, you’ve got time. A whole year. What’s important is that you’re already speaking in a new language!

Describing people and things in Italian

The key to remembering what you learn is to use it. If you have a friend you can talk to in your language, that helps. But if not, it’s still okay to talk to yourself. Just look at the world around you and see how much you can already describe.

Practice everywhere!

You’re learning a lot of great stuff. In fact, if you’ve been following along with me for the past couple of weeks, you should already be surprised with how much you’ve already learned! But don’t forget to use it! Always remember that it’s not a race, and that there are no points given to the guy who finishes the lesson first. Stop being so self-conscious!

What is the one thing that holds people back more than anything else? What prevents people from doing the the things they really want, whether it’s learning to dance well, or trying a new style of clothes, or learning a new language? The answer is self-consciousness.

Fun ways to remember numbers

How much Italian can you learn in one month?

Okay, so what if you still don’t think it’s possible to be fluent in a new language in one year? Or, maybe you believe it’s possible, but just not possible for you. Or, maybe a year sounds fine, but you think anyone who claims to do it in two months is a pure genious… or just crazy. Right?

Use your shopping list to practice!

When learning a new language through a program or a book, sooner or later you start getting new words for food. It starts with things that you might order in a restaurant, which are hard enough to remember. But before long you’re learning words like peppers, onions, garlic… and eventually you’re wondering what real use you’ll ever have for these new words, why you should learn them, or how you’ll ever remember them. The solution is simple: write your shopping list in Italian!

My visit to Tashkent, Uzbekistan

If my posts have seemed canned for the past week, or if you’ve noticed a lack of follow-ups on your comments, it’s because I’ve been away for the past week in Tashkent, Uzbekistan…

Don't wait, use what you learn right away!

When learning a new language, it’s easy to start deceiving yourself into waiting to use it. But why would you wait when there are so many good reasons for using it now, and so many interesting ways you can already use what you know to help you continue practicing and learning!
